This 1992 Japanese film tells the story of a scientist who sets out to create the new "super Adam and Eve", humans who cannot be controlled by their emotions. Of course, the end result it not exactly what the good doctor expects.

This modern tale of an attempt to build a creature is one of the best "horror" films ever made, even if its not a horror film but something else entirely. Certainly its on my short list of all time great films.
This film was introduced to me by someone who told me "I have this film that probably one of the best films you'll ever see. It will move you and touch you and make you think, but if I told you what it is and told you how its done you will think its the stupidest thing on the face of it and you won't watch it." Intrigued I asked what did he mean, and he said, "Well its a Frankenstein story, with a very goofy sort of edge, but which uses it to its advantage." My ears perked up, and I being a trusting soul took the tape and watched it. I was blown away.
The plot concerns a mad scientist attempting to make a new Adam and Eve in the wake of a suicidal plague that is ravaging the world. Locked up in his lab his experiments go differently then either he or we expect. Some of it is silly (The bolts in the neck, the wrestling moves...), all of it is touching and thought provoking.
I can not recommend this movie enough. If you are willing to take the film on its terms and allow it to tell its story then I urge you to seek this film out and see it. This is an undiscovered gem that will stay with you forever.

Also known as "The Last Frankenstein", this is an extraordinary, impeccably produced horror film. Director Takeshi Kawamura uses Mary Shelley's novel as a mere launching pad for an exploration of subjects as diverse and fascinating as the nature of love, desire, suicide, mass hypnosis, sex, alienation and jealousy.
And though the film is dense with subtext, it is also stunningly photographed and rich in atmosphere and detail. The performances are all amazing and Kawamura's sensitive handling of the strange, delicate relationships between the characters results in an emotionally charged, angst-ridden tragedy.
The scenes of the confused, troubled monster hurtling through a fog-shrouded forest at night are memorable and striking, as is a brilliant home movie-style montage of the film's more curious characters enjoying a precious afternoon at the beach. Kawamura creates resonating visual poetry of horror and sadness barely sighted since Todd Browning's classic "Freaks".
Intelligent, emotional, tragic and real, this is an absolute gem. 9/10
carnival总会自带一种独特的气质，而30s的更是如此，那是属于它的时代——嘈杂纷乱却又如漩涡般让人难以挪开视线。而整部影片从各种心理博弈到old days的“淡入淡出”方式都极其贴合那种气氛。
好工整的电影。what a crazy world
美术果然好的非常陀螺，本来以为是反诈骗片，结果最后变成了戒酒片……ps所以为啥不把画画的技能好好运用下…另外好莱坞女星的抗老医美真的有点过了……
畸形秀+精神分析，这个反人类的文本好戳我兴趣点。人类需要刺激就创造“怪物”，需要宽恕就创造“上帝”，需要原因就创造“精神分析”，骗的人越多越接近神明与真理。有点好奇老版的渎神程度，新版删了宗教的部分，但看着痕迹还是挺明显的。马戏团确实太长了，不过我估计陀螺真正想拍的就这段，一兴奋就塞了太多又不舍得删，结果又长又赶，反而没有尽兴，还不如美恐。到后面观感反而上升，整个电影作为畸形秀本身，以商品的滑稽姿态被包装给观众。而马戏团就是包裹商品的包装盒，扮演着氛围组、呈现主题和完成衔尾结构的作用。演员方面我反倒觉得选的不太好，库珀演这个角色有点太老了，没那股莽劲儿。布兰切特更夸张了，哪个心理学家会长得这么有侵略性，病人一看她就会紧张吧……
没看过原作和老版本单纯是被海报欺诈来的无辜路人说实话这卡司感觉不用演往那一戳就可以打五星结果不知道导演脑子被感染了硬生生用150分钟让人给他只能打两星还是友情价看在魔兔有那么一秒钟是同框的面子上就不考究剧情有多老套凯特的演技可真是没话说她不管自信脆弱咄咄逼人诱惑感性都能拿捏那么到位这就是天生演技刻在DNA里的女人从她的伤疤和负罪老头的独白来看她也不是单纯要坑男主应该属于一箭双雕预谋已久让你说我不够强大现在曾经害我与看不起我的两个恶魔骗子都遭到了应有的报应回归了他们本该呆着的位置真是可喜可贺导演稍微改编下原著让大魔王和小白兔重遇然后过上幸福快乐的人生活那这票房也好评分也罢不就都有了吗前期铺垫那么长只为对应最后我生来就是干这个的料有点太过牵强塔罗姐其实警告过他是他自己丢失了放弃的机会做了错误决定
只能用厚重来形容，甚至少了些灵动，但前期将隐喻线索铺满后期只讲剧情实在有意思。白兔相比来说这次要好很多，其他角色感觉有些鸡肋
视听出色，但是黑色氛围还是差口气，前面部分是陀螺的趣味，但是后面好像就不是一个调调了，过长的时长和缓慢的节奏让这两部分割裂感挺明显

影调很棒，我觉得最有趣的其实是嘉年华里边各种有意思的布景，这个小孩尸体真一言难尽。凯特·布兰切特如此迷人，令人着迷。说到底，其实确实和牧师没什么区别🤣
马戏团的戏难道不应该是个少年来演吗？！如同他所有的片子一样肤浅！
前半段不得不沉浸在德尔托罗恋物癖式的美学趣味中 当重心开始叙事一切便开始崩塌
快进看完的。男主一开始就有原罪啊，活活冻死了自己的父亲，然后放火烧了房子。请问动机是什么？就是为了说明这个男子天生是坏蛋吗？但他在马戏团的表现有好像温文尔雅，不像是个能杀父亲的人啊！！！还谈了一段浪漫的恋爱。然后画风突转，马上变坏了。原来重头戏在后面。但前面已经放了一个小时了！！铺垫太长！后面事情败露后，女律师栽赃的戏份，太过于明显了。那样直接在办公室暴露自己，只怕是会死得更快！男子前面聪明的不行，后面居然如此糊涂。。
前后呼应还是可以的 男主最终成为了他口中没有soul的geek 但是凯特那个Doctor角色的行为动机真的有点不清晰 还有说的很厉害的那个2号客人那段剧情很虎头蛇尾 把自己的女友叫来装鬼魂 一秒破功是什么鬼？而且这样的大老板竟然被男主这个骗子在自己的地盘赤手空拳打死？头号手下被他用车撞死？总觉得过于敷衍
#22#16场景服装造型都很出色的翻拍…只能说在如今这个年代，三位大女主被神棍渣男霍霍结果相互之间还都只有点头之交的电影立场就有那么点危险⚠️。最后隔着厕所门忽悠Molly那段对话看得我自我反省…人还是要有自知之明，无尽的欲望总有一天会反噬
这也太长了，节奏慢，实在看不下去了。58分钟弃剧。
美术摄影特效都到顶了无可挑剔，可在电影内容上唯有鲁妮·玛拉的部分有点儿费里尼[大路]那意思，马戏团那段少了德尔托罗理应有的恶趣味不是很满足，中间库珀和布兰切特的“连档模子”段落也拍得甚是无趣，就和用的这版《Stardust》一样，离抒情很远，怪味有所展露，却又不尽兴；“But you’re not as hard to read as you think, lady.”
前面铺垫有点长，只是为了结局的geek。在后期的blanchett的目的和动力，实在是藏的有点深，塑造的太少了。后面实在是为主角揪心为什么这么甘愿当geek，后来想了想这就是命吧，藏在自己心底的噩梦，一直都或多或少影响着你的一生，决定你的命运。
陀螺讲故事太没说服力了，美术也就勉勉强强。人物跑来跑去跑不出片场，肉眼可见的省钱，卡司阵容浪费观众一片赤诚。陀螺别谋害剧本了你还是专心去画画吧～
其实故事是有点cliche的，但陀螺的哥特审美又一次占了上风。
